It’s 2023, why blog?
I enjoy writing, but find it a lot easier to do with a dedicated space and a laptop, rather than frustratingly trying to cram and edit what I’ve written into the tiny box on instagram.
I’ve thought about the benefit of writing something on here for a while, perhaps using as a place to speak about pens, sketchbooks, artists, movies, music, books and games that I enjoy - things that inspire me and make my heart feel warm. My friend Amy (@miserable.beasts) recently started a blog and I have really enjoyed getting more of an insight into her thoughts and processes.
I’ve been on the internet for quite some time. I started using it around the time that forums and blogs were all the rage, and before facebook and youtube even existed. When I was learning to skateboard as a teenager I used low-res still images on a website to figure out how to ollie.
In the years that I’ve been online, I have had a silly daily poetry blog while I was at uni, started a ‘religion’ on facebook that sent out a weekly positive message on a Monday with all sorts of great things trying to encourage people to enjoy the small stuff. (It was called ‘cheerthefuckupism’ and had over 1000 members), and a few years back I wrote about 15 posts for a blog I set up about minimalism. In the end I minimalised that, along with my interest in minimalism.
I feel like a blog is an interesting space to hold in 2023. I have no idea how many people are still blogging, or are starting up new blogs, but I hope it is still happening. I think there will always be a space for longer, written pieces, especially ones that aren’t peppered with adverts and clickbait.
I’ve got a soft spot for blogs and hope that using this in whatever form is evolves into will give me space to reflect on ideas, delve into why something inspires me and share that with everyone who finds there way here.
The reality is that barely anyone will read this, but I pay for this space on the internet, so I might as well use it and write about what interests me without any expectations. At the moment, I’m imagining it could be a space to write about things that inspire me - books, movies, music, video games, other artists, flowers - whatever!
We’ll see what happens. Expect infrequent (or very frequent) updates and posts of varying lengths.
See you next time,
Sam :o)
